SVG & Cut File FAQs

Find answers to common questions about using our SVG, DXF, and EPS files with your cutting machine (Cricut, Silhouette, etc.).

Getting Started & File Access

  • Q: How do I open the ZIP file after downloading my designs?
    • A: Your purchase is delivered in a compressed ZIP folder. You must “extract” the files to access the SVG, DXF, etc.
    • On Windows: Right-click the zipped folder and select Extract All….
    • On Mac: Double-click the .zip file. A new, unzipped folder will appear in the same spot.
  • Q: What are all these different file types? Which one should I use?
    • A: We provide multiple formats for compatibility:
      • SVG (Scalable Vector Graphic): The preferred file type for most modern cutting machines like Cricut Design Space and Silhouette Designer Edition. It allows you to resize the image without losing quality.
      • DXF (Drawing Exchange Format): For users of the Silhouette Studio Basic (Free) Edition who do not have the paid Designer Edition upgrade.
      • PNG: High-resolution image file with a transparent background, primarily used for “print and cut” projects or sublimation.
      • EPS: Advanced vector format for professional graphic design software (Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, CorelDraw).
  • Q: I’m new to crafting with SVGs. Where should I begin?

Software & Compatibility

  • Q: Which cutting machines and software are compatible with your files?
    • A: Our files are designed to work with most popular machines and software, including:
      • Cricut Explore, Maker, and Joy (using SVG files in Design Space)
      • Silhouette Cameo and Portrait (using DXF for Basic, SVG for Designer Edition)
      • Brother ScanNCut
      • Glowforge (laser cutting)
      • Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, CorelDraw
  • Q: My SVG file won’t open in Silhouette Studio. What do I do?
    • A: The basic, free version of Silhouette Studio does not support SVG files. You must use the DXF file in that version. If you have the paid Designer Edition upgrade, you can use the SVG file.

Troubleshooting & Crafting

  • Q: The design is all one color/group in Design Space. How do I separate the layers?
    • A: The file is grouped for easy positioning. To separate the colors/elements:
      1. Select the entire design on your canvas.
      2. Click the “Ungroup” button (usually in the top right menu in Cricut Design Space).
      3. You can now move individual layers or use the “Attach” or “Weld” features as needed.
  • Q: Can I cut these designs in cotton fabric or vinyl?
    • A: Yes! SVG files are perfect for cutting heat transfer vinyl (HTV), adhesive vinyl, cardstock, fabric (if you have the right machine blade), and more.
  • Q: I had a different question!
    • A: Please Contact Us if your question wasn’t answered here!
