🎨 Sublimation Printing Guide
What is Sublimation? Sublimation is a heat transfer process that turns solid ink into gas, permanently bonding it to polyester fabrics and polymer-coated items.
What You’ll Need:
- Sublimation printer (Epson EcoTank or similar)
- Sublimation ink
- Sublimation paper
- Heat press (or Cricut Mug Press for mugs)
- Polyester fabric or sublimation blanks (mugs, tumblers, etc.)

- DO NOT MIRROR for most sublimation projects
- Print using sublimation printer on sublimation paper
- Set print quality to HIGH (Best or Photo quality)
- Let print dry for 30-60 seconds
2. Prepare Your Blank:
- Pre-press your fabric/blank for 5-10 seconds to remove moisture
- Lint roll fabric to remove any debris
- Position your print face-down on the surface
- Secure with heat-resistant tape
3. Press Your Design:
- Cover with protective paper
- Apply heat according to the chart below (see Heat Settings section)
- Use FIRM, even pressure
- After pressing, remove paper immediately for vibrant colors
4. Finishing:
- Let cool completely
- Peel transfer paper
- Your design is now permanently bonded!
⚠️ Important Sublimation Rules:
- Only works on polyester or polymer-coated surfaces
- Won’t work on 100% cotton (use HTV instead)
- Best on white or light-colored surfaces
- Colors are brighter on polyester than cotton blends

🌈 How to Layer Colors in Cricut Design Space
Multi-color designs require layering different colored vinyl. Here’s how to do it perfectly:
Understanding Layers:
When you upload a multi-color SVG, Design Space automatically separates it into layers by color. Each layer = one color of vinyl.
Step-by-Step Layering:
1. Upload & Prepare:
- Upload your SVG file
- Look at the Layers panel (right side) – each color is a separate layer
- Colors shown represent how Design Space sees them (you can use any vinyl color!)
2. Cut Each Layer Separately:
- In the Make It screen, you’ll see each color on a separate mat
- Load your first vinyl color and cut
- Weed that layer
- Repeat for each color
3. Layer Your Design:
Method 1: Layer Before Transfer (HTV)
- Position base layer (largest piece) first
- Press it down
- Position second layer on top, aligning carefully
- Press second layer
- Repeat for all layers
Method 2: Layer During Transfer (Adhesive Vinyl)
- Apply transfer tape to each layer
- Position base layer first
- Add additional layers one at a time, aligning as you go
- Remove transfer tape from all layers at once
💡 Pro Layering Tips:
- Start with base layer first (usually the largest or background color)
- Work from bottom to top in your design
- Use registration marks for complex alignments (draw light pencil marks)
- Test press on scrap fabric for multi-layer HTV to ensure good adhesion
- Let each layer cool before adding the next (for HTV)
- Press lightly between layers, then do a final firm press at the end
Common Mistakes to Avoid:
- Not mirroring HTV layers
- Pressing too hot on second/third layers (can melt previous layer)
- Not letting layers cool between applications
- Misaligning layers (take your time!)

🔥 Heat Press Settings Chart
Proper heat settings are crucial for successful transfers! Use this reference guide:
HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) Settings:
| Material | Temperature | Time | Pressure | Peel |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100% Cotton | 305°F (150°C) | 10-15 seconds | Firm | Hot or Cold* |
| 50/50 Cotton/Poly | 300°F (149°C) | 10-15 seconds | Firm | Hot or Cold* |
| 100% Polyester | 270°F (132°C) | 10-15 seconds | Firm | Hot or Cold* |

⚠️ Important Heat Press Tips:
- Always do a test press on scrap material first
- Use a heat gun or infrared thermometer to verify actual press temperature
- Settings may vary by brand – check manufacturer recommendations
- Pressing too hot can scorch fabric or cause ghosting
- Not hot enough = poor adhesion and peeling
🔧 Troubleshooting Common Errors
Problem: Design Not Cutting All the Way Through
Solutions:
- Increase blade depth or pressure setting
- Replace dull blade
- Clean cutting mat (debris can prevent proper cutting)
- Ensure material is flat on mat with no bubbles
- Try a fresh section of cutting mat
Problem: Vinyl Peeling or Not Sticking
Solutions:
- HTV: Increase temperature or press time
- HTV: Apply more pressure when pressing
- HTV: Pre-wash fabric without fabric softener
- Adhesive: Clean surface thoroughly before applying
- Adhesive: Burnish better with squeegee or credit card
- Make sure you’re using the right type of vinyl for your material
Problem: Design Looks Pixelated or Blurry
Solutions:
- You may have uploaded a PNG instead of SVG – SVGs scale infinitely
- Re-download from your Creative Makery purchase
- Use the SVG file, not the PNG, for cutting
- If using PNG for sublimation, ensure it’s 300 DPI
Problem: Colors Look Washed Out (Sublimation)
Solutions:
- Ensure you’re using sublimation ink, not regular ink
- Check printer settings – use “Best” or “High” quality
- Verify heat press is at correct temperature (400°F)
- Make sure you’re pressing long enough (60 seconds)
- Use polyester or poly-coated blanks (cotton won’t work!)
- Check that sublimation paper isn’t expired
Problem: Can’t Upload SVG to Cricut Design Space
Solutions:
- Make sure file is actually .SVG (not .zip or .png)
- Unzip the download first if it’s a .zip file
- Try using a different browser (Chrome works best)
- Clear browser cache and cookies
- Check file size – extremely large files may need to be simplified
- Make sure you have a stable internet connection
Problem: Layers Not Lining Up Correctly
Solutions:
- Use registration marks (light pencil marks) for alignment
- Work on a flat, well-lit surface
- Take your time – rushing causes misalignment
- For HTV, press each layer lightly first, then final firm press
- Consider using a multi-layer transfer technique
Problem: Mat Losing Stickiness
Solutions:
- Clean mat with baby wipes or Dawn soap and water
- Let dry completely (sticky side up) before using
- Don’t use harsh cleaners or scrub too hard
- Replace mat if cleaning doesn’t help
- Use masking tape to remove large debris between uses
